About crocodiles and the Everglades

Ich wollte schon immer die Everglades im Süden Floridas besichtigen - genau genommen seitdem ich das erste Mal über den Park im Unterricht erfahren habe. Deshalb war ich auch so wahnsinnig glücklich, den Naturraum mit eigenen Augen sehen und erleben zu können. 

Um ehrlich zu sein war mein Ausflug aber ein wenig anders als ich mir ausgemalt hatte. 

Vorgestellt hatte ich mir eine Kanufahrt durch das Wasser. Nah an der Natur zu sein. 

Stattdessen befand ich mich auf einem Sumpfboot (propellergetriebenes Wasserfahrzeug), was an sich auch ziemlich cool war. Allerdings saßen rechts neben mir drei Personen. Links neben mir drei weitere Personen. Also doch weiter entfernt von der Natur als gedacht. 

Trotz allem aber eine Erfahrung, die ich so schnell nicht wieder vergessen werde! Besonders wegen einigen Zusammenstößen mit Krokodilen. 

I've always wanted to see the Everglades in the South of Florida - to be exact, since we talked about these tropical wetlands in school which was a couple of years ago. That's why I was so happy to finally have a chance to see them in person. 

But to be honest, my trip to the Everglades was a little different than I had pictured it. 

I imagined canoeing through the water. Being close to the nature. Instead I was sitting in an airbaot, which was pretty cool, but unfortunately, there were three people sitting on my right. And another three people sitting on my left. Anything but close to the nature!

Nevertheless, it was quite an experience I'll not forget too soon. Especially because of several encounters with crocodiles. 

Kiss or no kiss?

A trip to Key West

"Wir sind an das Meer gefesselt und wenn wir zum Meer zurückkehren, sei es um zu segeln oder um zuzuschauen, gehen wir dahin zurück woher wir kamen."  - John F. Kennedy

Perfektes Zitat. Für mich ist Key West ein Paradies umgeben von Wasser. Ein Meer, welches aus kristall klarem Wasser besteht und die strahlende Sonne am Himmel refkletiert. Natürlich hat die Insel noch mehr als nur das zu bieten, wie zum Beispiel süße historische Gebäude, jedoch habe ich die meiste Zeit geschnorchelt oder mich auf dem Boot gesonnt, weshalb sich dieses Bild von Key West in mein Gedächtnis eingebrannt hat:

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came" - John F. Kennedy

Perfect quote. For me, Key West is a paradise surrounded by water. A sea consisting of crystal clear water which reflects the bright sun in the sky.  Of course the island also offers some cute, historical buildings, but as I spend most of the time snorkeling in the water or relaxing on a boat, this is THE picture etched in my memory:

Enjoy Life in Miami Beach

Miami bzw. Miami Beach ist verdammt cool. Das mal vorweg.

Ende August habe ich dort mit einem Freund ein paar Tage meines Urlaubs verbracht und dort definitiv die geilste Woche meines Jahres erlebt. Auch wenn ich dadurch das Fatal Finale von Pretty Little Liars verpasst habe (definitiv großes Opfer!) 

Zuerst war ich in Miami bei einer super coolen Couchsurferin, bei der unter anderem auch eine Eidechsenjagd stattfand, danach habe ich ins International Travelers Hostel gewechselt. In ein gemischtes Mehrbettzimmer. Mit den coolsten Leuten überhaupt. 

First off: Miami/ Miami Beach is pretty darn cool. 

In the end of August I spend some days of my vacation there and to be honest: I have never enjoyed a place so much before. Even though I wasn't able to watch the Pretty Little Liar's Fatal Finale( a very huge sacrifice!). 

First, I stayed for two nights at a Couchsurfer's place in Miami, where we chased a lizard, then I moved to the International Travelers Hostel in Miami Beach. Into a mixed dorm room. With the coolest people ever. 

San Francisco Sunset

„Es ist merkwürdig, aber von jedem, der verschwindet, heißt es, er sei in San Francisco gesehen worden. Es muss eine entzückende Stadt sein, die all die Reize des Jenseits besitzt“- Oscar Wilde

Dieses Zitat ist meiner Meinung nach auf jeden Fall zutreffend. San Francisco ist unglaublich schön anzusehen! 

Aber die Stadt scheint nicht nur aufgrund der Touristenattraktionen so entzückend zu sein. Ich bin bisher der Meinung, dass San Francisco (oder auch Frisco) vor allem bei Sonnenuntergang am schönsten aussieht. Vor allem, wenn die letzten Sonnenstrahlen durch die Wolkenkratzer scheinen und vor allem, wenn diese Palmenblätter berühren und sie zum Leuchten bringen. Unglaublich prachtvoll.  

Ich wollte mit einer Freundin vorletztes Wochenende eigentlich schon mittags in der Stadt antanzen, um Parks und Sehenswürdigkeiten (u.a. Golden Gate Bridge) zu besichtigen. Angekommen sind wir aber letztendlich erst um 5 Uhr. Ups! Als wir aus der BART-Station ausstiegen, stand die Sonne schon tief am Himmel. Anstatt zu den Attraktionen zu rasen, sind wir entspannt die Straßen entlang geschlendert und haben es uns vor einem  Starbucks am Pier gut gehen lassen. 

“It's an odd thing, but anyone who disappears is said to be seen in San Francisco. It must be a delightful city and possess all the attractions of the next world” - Oscar Wilde

I can only approve of this quote. San Francisco is so freaking beautiful to look at! 

But it's not only for tourist attractions that make the city seem to be so delightful. I think San Francisco (also called Frisco over here) is most beautiful at sundown. Especially when the last sunrays gleam through skyscrapers, touch hundreds of palm leaves and bringt them to shine. It is gorgeous. 

That day, I originally wanted to enter the city at noon to see lots of parks and sights, including the Golden Gate Bridge. However, me and my friend didn't make it till 5pm. Oops! The sun was already starting to settle down. Instead of racing to the attractions we wanted to see, we spend the evening strolling down the streets and sitting outside of a Starbucks close to the water. Pretty relaxing. 

Mission Peak

Letzter Sonntag um 8 Uhr: Mein Hostdad klopfte an der Tür und fragt, ob ich ihn und die zwei Ältesten nicht beim Wandern begleiten wolle. 

Natürlich sagte ich ihm zu, schnappte mir meine Kamera und sprang so schnell es ging ins Auto (= nach dreißig Minunte). Bei der Ankunft stockte mir der Atem: Ich befand mich inmitten einer der schönsten Umgebungen.

Last Sundaymorning at eight o'clock: While still sleeping in my bed, I heard a soft knocking sound and the voice of my hostdad asking me, if I wanted to join him and the oldest boys for a hike. 

For sure I croaked out a "yes", grabbed my camera and jumped into the car as quickly as possible (which took me like 30min). When we finally reached the Mission Pike my breath stopped: I was surrounded by the most beautiful environment I've ever seen.
